Waste Water

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe has become the ideal piping solution for public and private sewer and wastewater systems in recent decades. While more traditional materials, such as concrete, ductile iron, or PVC are subject to corrosion, fatigue and chemical attack, HDPE sanitary sewer pipe solves these issues and features a service life of 100 years, making it the ideal, low-maintenance investment for any municipal or private sewer owner.

Benefits of HDPE Pipes for Wastewater Systems and Sewers

When compared to other common wastewater piping system materials, such as PVC, ductile iron, or concrete, HDPE pipe offers significant benefits. Some of these include:

  • Chemical Resistance. Hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) corrosion is a serious threat to conventional sewer lines, like concrete and ductile iron, greatly reducing their service life. WL Plastics HDPE pipe is not attacked, corroded or degraded by H2S, ensuring a service life of 100 years.
  • Anti-corrosive properties. HDPE piping systems are immune to the harmful effects of corrosion and tuberculation, common factors that reduces the operational life of concrete and ductile iron wastewater systems. HDPE also resists other corrosive or harmful agents, including scaling and organics such as fungi, bacteria, and other microbial contaminants.
  • Leak-free. HDPE pipe is joined together via heat fusion, creating a welded, leak-free joint unlike conventional bell and spigot joints. These leak-free joints prevent infiltration and exfiltration making it a truly sanitary piping system.
  • Durability. HDPE pipe is resistant to fatigue from water hammer and surge events in sewer force mains. HDPE pipe is also abrasion resistant, ensuring that flowing water and slurries won’t damage the pipe throughout its service life.
  • Lightweight. HDPE pipes are much lighter in weight compared with ductile iron or concrete alternatives, which makes transportation and installation significantly easier and safer.
  • Cost-effectiveness. HDPE pipe is cost competitive with other sewer pipe options. HDPE pipe is faster, easier, and safer to install due to longer cut lengths and more linear footage per truck, which significantly reduce the overall project costs. With low maintenance costs and long service life, HDPE pipe is the ideal solution for wastewater systems.

HDPE Products for Wastewater Systems

WL Plastics produces HDPE pipe products in a wide variety of sizes and dimension ratios (DRs) including:

  • Solid Black HDPE Pipe in 3/4″ to 54″ sizes
  • Camcore (gray colored shell ID for camera inspection) HDPE Pipe in 4″ to 18″ IPS sizes; 4’’ to 16’’ DIPS
  • Iron Pipe Size (IPS) and Ductile Iron Pipe Size (DIPS) available
  • Color stripes for easy in-ground identification available

Examples of Applications for HDPE Pipes

WL Plastics HDPE pipe is the ideal piping solution for any wastewater or sewer application. The use of HDPE pipe for wastewater and sewer applications has become increasingly popular due to pipe bursting, slip-lining, and other trenchless installation methods. Below are a few highlighted uses of HDPE pipe in wastewater and sewer projects.

  • Sewer Force mains
  • Gravity flow sewers
  • Sanitary sewer lines
  • Culvert lining/relining
  • Storm drains
  • Digester lines
  • Intake and outfall lines
  • Sewer repair and replacement
  • Sludge lines

Below are specific examples of projects that WL Plastics has successfully completed using our HDPE pipe:

  • Clover Point Pump Station: A two-mile, new force-main pipeline was required to convey wastewater from the pumping station at Clover Point to the treatment facility at McLaughlin Point in the City of Victoria. The design team selected HDPE as the ideal choice for this project due to its flexibility and ease of installation. WL Plastics completed the project ahead of schedule in 2019.
  • Memphis, TN Sewer Main: The City of Memphis used HDPE pipes from WL Plastics to create a temporary bypass for a 96-inch sewer line that needed to be relocated. The project used 6000 feet of 18-inch HDPE pipe in conjunction with 1000 feet of 24-inch HDPE pipe to create a bypass that can handle approximately 140 million gallons of wastewater each day.
  • Knoxville, TN Sewer Infrastructure: This project replaced an existing 6-inch clay line with 8-inch DIPS Camcore™ HDPE pipes. The use of Camcore™ pipes with light gray colored interior surface facilitated excellent video inspection.

WL Plastics is the leading supplier of HDPE pipe in the United States, with more than 20 years of experience. WL Plastics manufactures pressure pipe in diameters ranging from ¾”–54”, and our production capacity currently exceeds 900 million pounds annually. WL Plastics is a member of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and is certified to ISO 9001:2015, FM, NSF, and UL certifications.
